Reserves

Nearly 40 individuals make up the ranks of the Aiken County Sheriff's Office Reserves. The program, which began in 1985, offers community-minded men and women an opportunity to volunteer as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff. Selected individuals undergo 14 weeks of law enforcement training. Upon successful completion, individuals become certified law enforcement officers. Deputies furnish their own equipment, volunteer a minimum of 20 hours a month, and complete monthly in-service training.

ACSO Reserves in 2003 volunteered 21,784 hours, a savings to Aiken County government and taxpayers of $435,700. In addition to patrol duties, Reserve Deputy Sheriffs throughout the year provide security and traffic control at community events, including the Aiken Trials and Western Carolina State Fair.

The agency periodically conducts training. In order to be eligible for the program, interested individuals must meet the following minimum requirements:

21 years old
  High school diploma or general equivalency diploma
  U.S. citizen
  Resident of Aiken County
  Birth certificate
  No criminal history
  Good credit rating
  Good driving record/provide 10 year certified copy
  Pre-employment drug screen and physical
  Good moral character
